The Enovix 3D cell architecture also provides several safety features not obtainable with a conventional Li-ion battery structure (see illustration below).

  1. The Enovix cell architecture allows for a ceramic separator that tolerates higher temperatures than the polymeric separator in a conventional Li-ion battery.
  2. Excess capacity in the Enovix patented silicon anode reduces risk for lithium metal plating during overcharge conditions.
  3. Distributed collectors limit current if an electrical short occurs.
  4. A walled off cathode limits propagation of material breakdown.

In addition, high thermal dissipation of the Enovix 3D cell mitigates local cell hot spots. Collectively, the features of the Enovix 3D cell architecture significantly reduce the danger of thermal runaway, versus conventional Li-ion battery construction.
